And it seems as though the unravelling of this chain of events began with a phone call; apparently that night Tiger had told his wife Elin Nordegren that a US magazine was planning to run a story about his relationship with nightclub hostess Rachel Uchitel.

He told the former Swedish model that the story simply wasn’t true and asked her to ring Rachel in order to confirm there was nothing going on between them (allegedly Tiger had tried to tell her that he and the nightclub hostess were simply “friends”).

Not convinced of his fidelity from their short conversation, Elin waited until Tiger was asleep and then texted Uchitel from her husband’s phone. A source said:

"After Woods fell asleep, Elin looked through his cellphone. She found text messages to Uchitel and one that said 'You are the only one I've loved'.

"Elin began texting, pretending to be Tiger. Uchitel texted back. Elin called Uchitel, who answered thinking it was Tiger. Elin said something approximating to 'I knew it was you'."

Uchitel's reply, apparently, was: "oh f***" before she then immediately hung up.

Anyway, a couple a months on and despite everything it seems as though the pair are still trying to salvage their marriage; according to reports Elin actually jetted to Mississippi on Sunday where she visited Tiger at the sex rehabilitation center he is currently staying in.

She then returned to Florida yesterday where we spotted her going to lunch with her young son…
