Last night The XX were stunned beyond belief when they beat the bookies favourite, Paul Weller and previous winner, Dizzee Rascal, to the prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize.

The relatively new three-piece group thanked the audience as they accepted their £20,000 cheque and Oliver Sim, the band’s singer and bass player said:

“We’ve had the most incredible year and it has just felt like every day we’ve just woken up to something incredible we just weren’t expecting. It has felt just like a haze. Being here is like a moment of clarity in all that’s happening.”

The south London based band saw off stiff competition from Biffy Clyro, Corinne Bailey Rae, Kit Downes Trio, Foals, I Am Kloot, Laura Marling, Mumford And Sons, Villagers and Wild Beasts, to name but a few of the 12 shortlisted acts, but do you think the right people won?
