After four sterling years as Doctor Who, David Tennant shocked fans last night at the National TV Awards (seriously, he did, watch the video – you can actually hear an audible, collective gasp) when he announced that he’ll be leaving the cult BBC Sci-Fi show.

Yes, it’s a sad day for Doctor Who fans everywhere. But, the question on everybody’s lips is: who’ll be the new Doctor? As you can imagine, online bookies have already began placing bets on which actor will replace Tennant after 2009. BBC Wales, who produce the show, haven’t even begun the process of searching for the new Doctor, so at the moment any names that have been entered into the ring are purely hypothetical.

Among the more probable suggestions for potential Tennant predecessors are: Patterson Joseph (who has already appeared in two episodes of the show playing Roderick), James Nesbitt, Russell Tovey, Anthony Head, Richard E. Grant, Alan Davies and Bill Nighy. Do any of those actors take your fancy to play the latest incarnation of Doctor Who?
