Early Life

Angelina Jolie was born in Los Angeles to the actors John Voight and Marcheline Bertrand. Jolie’s older brother is the actor James Haven.

Jolie’s parents separated when she was 1-year old and together with her brother they went to live with their mother. Her mother abandoned her acting career to focus on raising the two children.

Jolie developed an interest in films during her time with her mother when the two of them watched movies at home. It was this, rather than her father’s success in Hollywood that eventually led her to pursue a career in Hollywood. Jolie enrolled for acting classes at Lee Strasberg Theater Institute, where during her studies she participated in several theater productions.

Jolie attended Beverly Hills High School while living with her mother. She has spoken about her difficulties in school where she was picked on for being extremely thin and being an oddball. Her mother had a modest income and often struggled to make ends meet while raising two children in a high-income society.

As a teen, Jolie had transferred to Moreno High School and become a “goth outsider”, wearing black outfits and failing to connect with fellow students. She practiced self-harm during this time as a coping mechanism against her eating disorder, insomnia, and social awkwardness.

Jolie’s relationship with her father was dysfunctional for a long time and the two of them hardly spoke for years: they famously avoided each other during movie premieres.

Jolie’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and succumbed to the disease the same year. Following her mother’s passing, Jolie and her father, John Voight, started working on mending their relationship and have since become cordial with one another.

Career

Jolie started auditioning for films at 16 and initially struggled to get any roles due to her “dark demeanor”. In the early 1990s, Jolie appeared in several of her brother’s school films while he attended the USC School of Cinema-Television. During this time she also appeared in music videos for the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Meatloaf, and The Lemonheads.

Her first starring role came in 1993 when she passed the audition for the sci-fi movie Cyborg 2. The film was very poorly received.

Jolie’s second leading role was in the film Hackers (1995) for which she received praise for her performance. She won a Golden Globe award for the documentary George Wallace, released by TNT in 1997.

Following her success with George Wallace, Jolie started in a HBO production called “Gia” in 1998. Gia was her major Hollywood breakthrough at the time and her portrayal of a heroin addict.

Jolie starred in the blockbuster Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) opposite Nicholas Cage. In 2001 she played the video game character Lara Croft in the famous Tomb Raider film series. By 2002, Jolie had become a legitimate movie star, earning between $10-15 million per film for most of the 2000s.

In 2005 she starred in Mr & Mrs Smith alongside Brad Pitt. The film earned $478 million in the box office and became her most successful film for almost a decade. Her 2014 Disney fantasy Maleficent received mixed reviews but went on to make $757 million worldwide, becoming her most successful film todate.

Personal Life

Jolie has been married three times. First to Jonny Lee Miller (m. 1996; div. 2000), Billy Bob Thornton(m. 2000; div. 2003), and Brad Pitt (m. 2014; div. 2019). She had a romantic relationship with model Jenny Shimizu in the mid-90s and has stated that she is bisexual.

Her relationship with Brad Pitt attracted huge media scrutiny as it led to Pitt divorcing his then-wife Jennifer Anniston. Jolie has six children from her marriage to Brad Pitt: Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt, Pax Thien Jolie-Pitt, Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, Knox Leon Jolie-Pitt, and Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt. Four of her children are adopted.
