Richard Allen York was born on September 04, 1928, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States. His father Bernard York, worked as a salesman, and his mother Betty York was a housewife. York had one sibling, a sister named Carolyn.
He started his career when he was still 15 years old at the start of the CBS radio program called That Brewster Boy. He appeared in a number of radio shows and instructional films before he went to New York City where he performed on Broadway in Tea and Sympathy and Bus Stop.
York’s first major television role was in the show The Patty Duke Show. He then went on to star in the hit series Bewitched as Darrin Stephens, a role which he played for eight seasons. Other notable roles include appearances on Bonanza, Here Come the Brides, and The Love Boat.
In 1959, York suffered a permanent, disabling back injury, disabling back injury while filming an episode of the show They Came to Cordura. The injury didn’t instantly end his career though.
After a year from his injury, he played Bertram Cates in the film version of Inherit the Wind. In 1962, he took part in the comedy-drama entitled Going My Way.
York was married to Joan Alt from 1954 until his death in 1992. The couple had five wonderful children named Kim York, Matthew York, Mandy York, Christopher York, and Stacy York.
Dick York was a heavy smoker and he can finish three packs of cigarettes per day. In 1989, he started using an oxygen tank just for him to breathe while he is bedridden. Despite his sickness, he said that he is still very blessed in life and he has no complaints.
He died on February 20, 1992, at age 63 due to complications from emphysema at Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. His body is buried in Plainfield Cemetery in Michigan.
