Early Life

Kang Ho-dong was born on June 11, 1970, in Jinju-si, South Korea. Kang’s family owned a small restaurant, and he worked there as a child. Kang has two sisters.

He finished his high school education at Masan Business High School and right after high school, he started his career as a Korean Wrestler.

When he started wrestling he lost many times but on July 8, 1989, during the 44th national ssireum championships, he defeated the legendary Lee Mangi and win the tournament. He also win the Baekdujangsa Ssireum Championship more than five times and the Cheonhajangsa Ssireum Championship five times. He is known as the youngest ever Cheonhajangsa titleholder.

Career Highlights

After Kang Ho-dong ended his wrestling career, he then entered the entertainment industry as a host and a comedian in 1993.

He became the host of many hit shows such as X-Man, Love Letter, and Ya Shim Man Man and he has won a number of awards. He was recognized as one of the best tv hosts on Korean TV.

In 2008, Kang Ho-dong won the TV category Daesang (Grand Prize) as a comedian. He was the very first to receive this award.

In 2011, he hosted the most popular programs in South Korea namely Happy Sunday, 2 Days & 1 Night, Golden Fishery, and Strong Heart but he also announced his retirement in the same year.

He decided to end his career because of his tax evasion issue. He was then investigated for the said issue. At the end of the investigation, it was concluded that he did not commit acts of intentional evasion and his accountant was the one who made some mistakes.

In 2012, after his tax evasion issue, he decided to return to the entertainment industry and he signed a contract with SM C&C. He had a rough time coming back but finally in 2015, his shows started to receive good feedback and high ratings from the audience and he regained his popularity slowly.

Kang Ho-dong also now owns a chain of South Korean barbeque restaurants called Baek Jeong that has now 7 branches internationally including in New York.

Personal Life

Kang Ho-dong married Lee Hyo-jin, a South Korean actress, on December 31, 2006. The couple has two daughters.

In January of 2017, Kang was accused of sexual assault by an anonymous woman. SM Entertainment released a statement in response to the accusation stating that they would be fully cooperating with the police investigation.
