Early life

Leona Louise Lewis was born on April 3rd, 1985 in London, England. Her father has Afro-Guyanese roots whereas her mother traces her origin in Wales, Ireland, and Italy. She has an older half-brother, Bradley, and a younger brother, Kyle. She got her education from the Sylvia Young Theater School, the Italia Conti Academy of Theater Arts, and the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology. Leona spent a part of her life in Hackney, East London. At 17 years of age, Leona left BRIT School so she could pursue a career in music.

Leona won the third series of the X Factor in 2006 performing a cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This” and as a prize for winning, she signed a £1 million recording contract with Syco Music.

In 2007, she proceeded to release her debut album, Spirit, which became one of the best-selling albums of all time in the UK and the best-selling debut album by a female artist this century. Shortly after, in 2009, she released her second album, Echo. She did her first tour, titled The Labyrinth in 2010, featuring songs from Echo and Spirit.

After she was done with the tour, she started working on her third studio album, Glassheart that was released in October 2012.

Her next album titled Christmas, with Love was released in November 2013 and with that, she set a record for the most top-five singles in the history of the UK singles chart for a British female artist. After signing a new record deal with Island Records UK, she released her fifth studio album, I Am in 2015 for which she did a headlining concert tour, the I Am tour from February to March 2016.

During this time, she also worked as an actress, appearing in the musical film Walking on Sunshine, the musical Cats, and the TV Series, The Oath. In August 2021, she did a song with James Morrison titled “Grow Old with Me”. In November 2021, she put out the song “Kiss Me It’s Christmas” featuring Ne-Yo.

Leona was a vegetarian from 12 years of age and has been vegan since 2012. In 2008, she was declared PETA’s Person of the Year. She is a staunch supporter of World Animal Protection and a sponsor of the Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Essex.

In 2017, she disclosed that she had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and talked about the pain she experienced because of it. She married her fiancé, Dennis Jauch, in 2019. They had been dating since 2010. They both got married in a ceremony in Italy.
