Early Life

Allen was born in Hammersmith, England to parents David Allen and Alison Owen. She has two sister, Sarah and Rebecca; and a brother named Alfie. Allen was introduced to film at an early age, appearing in an episode of “The Comic Strip” at the age of 3.

Allen was a trouble child in school and was expelled from 13 different schools for smoking and behavioral problems.

While in school, a music teacher overhead Allen singing Oasis’ Wonderwall.

The teacher was impressed with Allen and organized singing lessons for her which led to a moving performance at a school function. According to Allen, the school teachers and staff were “brought to tears at the sight of a troubled child finally doing something good.”

Allen played the piano, violin, and trumpet but dropped out of school at 15 to focus on her music career.

Career

Allen’s parents flew the family to Ibiza for the holidays and returned thereafter, leaving her to stay with friends. While there, Allen worked at a record company and sold extasy to support herself. She later met record producer George Lamb through her connections and was signed under his talent management company but failed to secure a recording contract. Allen attributes her initial rejections by record companies to heavy drinking and a perception that her entitlement came from having famous parents.

Allen’s contact with Reagal Records was signed in 2005 and the label provided her with £25,000 to use for recording her first album. Although her label had committed to promote her album upon release, they were preoccupied with other artists signed to the label, like Coldplay, who were releasing an album around the same time.

Due to a lack of marketing by her label, Allen resorted to posting unreleased content on MySpace, attracting thousands of fans. Her record company responded to this by recording 500 vinyl records, some of which retailed at £40 a piece. Allen recorded two mix tapes for her promotional work and her rising popularity led to a front-page feature in The Observer magazine.

Allen’s album Alright Still, was officially released in 2006, selling 520,000 copies in the US and 960,000 in the UK. In total, the album sold 2 million units worldwide. Her second album It’s Not Me, It’s You, was released in February 2008, reaching number one in the UK, Canada, and Australia. The album reached number 5 in the US.

Her albums, Sheezus and No Shame were recorded and released between 2012 and 2018. Allen revealed on Beats 1 that she has started working on her fifth album.

Personal Life

Allen has spoken publicly about her struggles with alcohol and substance abuse and the impact it may have had on her career. She also struggled with her body image, sometimes sleeping for days to avoid eating.

Allen had an ongoing ordeal with a stalker named Alex Gray, who first contacted her through Twitter. Gray, who went by the Twitter handle “@lilyallenisRIP” sent Allen threatening letters detailing his plans to attack her. London’s Metropolitan Police arrested Gray on a charge of burglary.

Allen is married to David Harbour and together they have two children.
