Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on the 16th of August, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan to Silvio Anthony Ciccone and Madonna Louise. She was raised alongside five siblings in the suburbs of Detroit and Avon Township. Unfortunately, Madonna lost her mother to breast cancer at the tender age of five.
Madonna was enrolled at St. Fredericks and later St. Andrew’s for her Elementary school before joining West Middle School. She took a keen interest in ballet and while learning ballet, her teacher, Christopher Flynn encouraged her to pursue a career in dance. After middle school, Madonna attended Rochester Adams High School and graduated having earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan due to her dancing. During the summer, Madonna was a student at the American Dance Festival in Durham, North Carolina.
Madonna eventually cut short her time in college in 1978 and moved to New York City with $35 to her name. She secured a job at Dunkin’ Donuts to stay afloat while she furthered her dance studies at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.
