Early Life

George Perry Floyd Jr. was born on the 24th of October 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to parents George Perry and Larcenia Jones Floyd. He was raised alongside four siblings but at the age of two, his parents split and his mother relocated him and his siblings to the Cuney Homes public housing.

From a young age, Floyd expressed a keen interest in sports and was especially good at basketball and football. He had the goal of making a career out of his sports talent and eventually improving his livelihood. In Houston, Floyd was enrolled at Ryan Middle School before proceeding to Yates High School. It was during his time at Yates that Floyd found the opportunity to develop his skills on the field and became co- captain of the basketball team. He also accompanied his school’s football team to the Texas States Championships.

In 1993, Floyd graduated highschool with a football scholarship to the South Florida Community College. He joined the institution and continued to play basketball for the school’ s team. After two years, Floyd transferred to Texas A&M,Kingsville before eventually dropping out.

Career Highlights

After dropping out of college in 1995, Floyd returned to Houston and picked up a job as an automotive customizer. He continued to play club basketball but also joined the rap group ‘Screwed Up’ to sharpen up his rapping which he had begun a year prior. Floyd brought a unique style and flow in his raps and was acknowledged by the New York Times.

Floyd eventually left the group and joined ‘Presidential Playas’ and the group worked together on the album ‘Block Party’ released in 2000. Unfortunately, Floyd was unable to pursue a career in music or venture into a different line as he began having multiple run-ins with the law. Between the years 1997 and 2005, Floyd had served 8 separate jail terms for different offences.

In 2009, Floyd was eventually sentenced to a five year prison term as part of a plea deal for the aggravated robbery charges brought against him in 2007. He was paroled in January 2013 and took the opportunity to live a better life.

On his release Floyd joined the Resurrection Houston Church where he volunteered in food delivery to the elderly and other church programs. He also used the opportunity to mentor younger congregants against violence. Floyd eventually found his break when a church ministry focused on assisting Third Ward men land jobs in Minnesota selected him. Floyd moved to Minneapolis where he worked numerous jobs as security guard and delivery driver. His last job was security at the Conga Latin Bistro Club which came to an end due to the lockdown measures implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Floyd was a father of five and had two grandchildren. He was also in a relationship with his girlfriend Courteney Ross.

Death

Floyd died on 25th May 2020 when Derek Chauvin, a Minneapolis police officer, pressed his knee to his throat while he was restrained face down on the street. Chauvin is said to have had his knee on Floyd’s throat for 9 minutes and 29 seconds eventually killing him. Floyd’s last words were ” I can’t breathe.” which he said as his final effort to get Chauvin to release him.
