Jean Balukas was born on June 28, 1959, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. Her father is Albert Balukas and her mother’s name is unknown to the public. She grew up with her four older brothers.

Jean Balukas was introduced to pool when she was just 4 years old in her childhood home. Her parents decided to buy the 9-foot pool table to keep her four brothers from playing pool outside of their home.

Jean Balukas started playing pool at the age of eight and quickly developed a talent for the game. By the time she was 15, she was already one of the top players in the country.

According to her, when she was younger, she almost never want to go to the pool hall and if she did go, she won’t play. She felt uncomfortable since, at that time, it is not normal for girls to play that kind of sport.
