Charles was born on November 14, 1948, in Buckingham Palace. During his birth, the one reigning the throne was his grandfather named George VI. Charles is the first offspring of Queen Elizabeth II and Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

In 1955, Buckingham Palace stated that Charles would receive an education rather than having a private tutor. Charles began studying at Hill House School on November 7, 1956, in England.

Charles broke the aristocratic legacy after completing his A-levels and went straight to university instead of entering the British Armed Forces. He started studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, in October 1967. He studied anthropology and archaeology for the first part of the Tripos before switching to heritage for the second stage.

He enrolled in the College of Royal Air Force of Cranwell to undergo training as a pilot on March 8, 1971.

For his final ten months of active military service in the navy, Charles gained leadership of the coastline minehunter HMS Bronington on February 9, 1976.
