Early Life

Sam Onyedikachi Acho was born on the 6th of September 1988 in Dallas, Texas, USA to parents Dr. Sonny and Christine Acho. He was raised alongside his brother Emmanuel Acho and two other siblings. Sam and his siblings were raised in a missionary family aimed at providing medical aid in Nigeria.

For his high school education, Sam attended the St. Marks School of Texas. He was a brilliant student and made the academic honor roll each year. Besides his academic excellence, Sam was also on the school football team and served as co-captain for his junior and senior years. Having identified his athletic capabilities, Sam represented his school at the state private school championships setting the record in the 12-pound shot put at 57’9 .25. As a senior on the basketball team, Sam averaged 12 points a game and graduated high school having been ranked the sixth-best football prospect at his position.

Sam joined the University of Texas soon after he graduated from college and played defensive end for the school team. By his junior year, Sam had solidified his place on the team and started all 14 games. In 2010, he was voted team MVP after a successful senior year season.

Career Highlights

Sam attended his first NFL Scouting Combine in 2011 and performed all the combine and positional drills. In March of the same year, he was included in the Texas pro day. By the end of the pre-draft process, experts projected Sam as a second or third-round pick. Contrary to predictions, Sam was selected by Arizona Cardinals as a fourth-round pick as the 12th defensive end of the NFL draft that year.

In July 0f 2011, Sam signed a 2.51 million four-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals. Sam proceeded to training camp and competed for the starting outside linebacker position against Clark Haggans and O’Brien Schofield. He made his debut later that year at the Arizona Cardinals season-opener against the Carolina Panthers. Sam made his first of many tackles in the game and ended his rookie season with 35 solo tackles, seven sacks, two pass deflections, and four forced fumbles.

Sam stayed with the Arizona Cardinals for three more seasons until 2015 when he signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears. Sam has since played for the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Throughout his career, he has recorded 239 tackles, 18.0 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 3 interceptions, and, 11 pass deflections.

Currently, Sam Acho works as a college football analyst for ESPN. He first received the offer to work on TV from Fox Sports but chose to work with ESPN. Sam admitted in a later interview that it was his lifelong desire to work onscreen and connect with people.

Sam Acho is happily married to his wife of 7 years Ngozi Ebichi. The two tied the knot on the 15th of March 2014. Sam met Ebichi on one of the many missionary trips he took to Nigeria with his family. Ebichi was a caregiver to his grandmother and was heavily invested in his father’s Living Hope Christian Ministries and the two hit it off.

The couple has been blessed with three children and they continue to make annual trips to Nigeria to continue in their ministry and relief work.
