Rakesh Asthana was born on July 09, 1961, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Rakesh Asthana is the son of Late Shri Om Prakash and Smt. Sheela Devi.
He finished his high school education at Netarhat Residential School and his college education at St. John’s College, Agra.

Rakesh Asthana was appointed as Police Commissioner of Delhi in 2021. Before he became the Police Commissioner of Delhi, he was assigned to investigate the Fodder Scam from the government of treasury in India. After his investigation, he filed a case against Lalu Prasad Yadav in 1996 and was arrested in 1997.
Rakesh caught the DGMS Director General who was taking bribes. He was also tasked to investigate the bombing that happened on July 26, 2008, in Ahmedabad where he closed the case after 22 days.
On July 27, 2021, he was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police, Delhi, replacing Balaji Shrivastava.
As a Police officer, he faced many controversies such as money laundering. According to NGO, Common Cause, his name was included in the list of the 2011 diary seized from Sterling Biotech.
Rakesh with the Special Director CBI, Alok Verma was also accused of accepting bribes. They were both accused of bribery and they were asked to go on leave by the Central Vigilance Commission while the investigation is going on.
After the investigation, it was concluded that both Rakes and Alok are not guilty of the accusations.
