Sunil Dharod became an orphan at the age of 3. After the demise of his father, the family was devastated. Sunil then started working to provide for the family. He and his brothers did many odd jobs and delivered milk to customers. His mother earned a small amount being a seamstress. She often borrowed from her brother to survive through the extreme hand-to-mouth situation though she always returned the borrowed money. Sunil’s mother was poor, but she wanted her children to do something great in life. Sunil always credits his mother for insisting the children practice good work ethics. When Sunil was 15, the family moved to the United States. Sunil began to do three jobs simultaneously, at Carl Jr., Jack in the Box, and an Indian restaurant.
Sunil also worked as an auto mechanic and earned $100,000 a year with double shifts. Similarly, Harshad was working in a restaurant, and due to his excellent work ethic, he was promoted many times by the management. Soon he became the restaurant supervisor while he was an ordinary worker before. Both of the brothers worked hard because they had bigger goals to achieve.
Dharod purchased the first restaurant franchise of Jack in the Box when he was just 21. After its success, he bought six more franchises. The restaurant then refrained from selling more locations to Sunil. Dharod sold all the franchises in 1992.
The Dharods moved to Dallas, Texas, where they bought 12 Burger King franchises and increased the number to 19. They invested in 11 Blockbusters franchises, which they had to close later because of the trending streaming movies. It was a setback to the Dharod family, but they never learned to despair.
