Early Life

Richard Dove Williams Jr. was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on February 14, 1942. He was the firstborn out of five children of his parents Julia Mae Metcalf and Richard Dove Williams Sr.

He grew up in a poor household with his siblings Pat, Barbara, Penny, and Faye. After finishing high school, he went to Saginaw, Michigan then to California.

Career Highlights

Richard Williams learned about tennis from a person known as “Old Whiskey”. Because of his love for the sport tennis, Richard wanted her future daughters to be tennis professionals after he saw Virginia Ruzici playing on tv.

According to Richard, he prepared an 85-page plan on how he will teach his daughters Venus and Serena the sport tennis. When his daughters were four years old, he started teaching them tennis by taking them to public tennis courts. According to him, it would be better if he had started teaching them at the age of six rather than four because he realized that they were too young.

Richard also enrolled his daughters at a tennis academy but in 1995, he started coaching them himself. After a few years, his daughters started winning grand slam tournaments.

William’s daughter Serena Williams won the US Open in 1999 and his daughter Venus Williams won the Wimbledon title in 2000.

Personal Life

Richard Williams has been married three times. His first wife was Betty Johnson whom he met after he moved to California. The two of them tied the knot in 1965 and they divorced in 1973. They had five wonderful children named Sabrina, Richard III, Ronner, Reluss, and Reneeka.

After his first divorce, he met Oracene “Brandy” Price in 1979 and they married after a year and got divorced in 2002. The two of them had two daughters Venus and Serena who are now both professional tennis players.

His third marriage was with the store owner Lakeisha Juanita Graham who is just a year older than his daughter Venus. William and Lakeisha married in 2010 and they had one son. The two of them divorced after 7 years of being married.

Aside from having sons and daughters from his 3 wives, he also has a son outside of marriage.

In 2016, Williams had a stroke and another stroke in 2020.
