Steve Bruce was born Stephan Roger Bruce on 31 December 1960 in Corbridge in Northumberland. His father, Joe Bruce a man from the same county, and his mother Sheenagh Bruce belonged to Bangor in Northern Ireland. Steve Bruce lived with his young brother in Daisy Hill near Wallsend.
Bruce completed his schooling at Benfield School. He was a fan of Newcastle United since his childhood days and would sneak into St James’ Park to see his team playing without paying the ticket.
He played football for Wallsend Boys Club like many other future professional players who belonged to his neighborhood. For his passion and sports skills, he was chosen to represent the Newcastle School representative team. He was also selected and put into a team that would serve as ball boys at the age of 13. He played in the 1974 League Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.
He was turned down by many professional clubs during his early years e.g., Derby County, Newcastle United, Southport, and Sunderland. Just the moment Bruce was about to start working as an apprentice plumber at the Swan Hunter dockyard, Third Division club Gillingham offered him a trial period. The manager of this club, Gerry Summers, got impressed by him when he saw him playing at an international youth tournament for Wallsend.
For the trial period, he went to Kent alongside Peter Beardsley, a fellow player from the Wallsend club. Beardsley was not selected, but the club signed Bruce as an apprentice.
During the initial years of his career, Steve Bruce was famous for causing disciplinary issues because of being an over-enthusiastic player full of energy and passion. But later, he became an all-around player on whom the team could easily depend. Now people know him for deliberate and calm playing skills and being able to play well under pressure.
