A’Lelia Bundles was born as A’Lelia Perry Bundles on the 7th of June, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. She was born to, A’Lelia Mae Perry Bundles and S. Henry Bundles Jr. She went to North Central High School for her early education. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College and graduated with an MS in Journalism from the Colombia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1976.

A’Lelia was brought up in Indianapolis. She belongs to a family of business executives. Her grandmother, Madam C. J. Walker adopted her mother A’Lelia Mae Perry Bundles. Madam Walker was the owner of a self-made hair care products manufacturing company. Madam Walker, born Sarah Breedlove was the daughter of farm laborers who had been enslaved when the American Civil War ended. She rose herself from the farms and became a successful businesswoman in the 20th century. The story of her great-great grandmother inspired A’Lelia to write her biography.
