Early Life

Richard Vincent Mercer was born on 17th October 1969 in St.John’s,Newfoundland, Canada to parents Kenneth Mercer and Patricia Cook. He was the youngest of three children and was raised in Middle Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador. Although his parents were strict, they allowed their children to express their political views. Rick attended Macdonald Drive Elementary but was not a particularly brilliant student. He had no long-term ambitions locked down until the 11th grade when he signed up for the Drama Club as stage manager. His work as stage manager was subpar but the drama director was intrigued by him and encouraged him not to quit the club. Rick joined fellow drama students and created his first play ever. On the project he worked with Ashley Billard and Andrew Younghusband who became his comedy partners.

Career Highlights

Rick got his start in comedy at the LSPU Hall in St.John’s however, it was not until 1990 that he gained nationwide attention. He became wildly popular after he performed his one-man stage show ‘Show Me the Button I’ll Push It, or Charles Lynch Must Die’ at the National Arts Centere’s Atelier in Ottawa. The political satire launched him to stardom and he immediately capitalised on the attention to tour across Canada. In 1992, he performed his second stage show ‘I’ve Killed Before, I’ll kill Again’ at the National Arts Centre Studio Theatre which also soared to popularity. Later that year, he joined CBC television alongside Cathy Jones,Mary Walsh and Greg Thomey to create the TV series ‘This Hour Has 22 Minutes.’ Rick highlighted the show for an entire eight seasons with his popular segments which included a two minute rant where he spoke directly to the camera on the political climate and issues in Canada and ‘Talking to Americans.’ In the latter he engaged Americans on Canadian topics. The show saw governors Tom Vilsack and his colleague Mike Huckabee together with then presidential candidate George .W . Bush land epic fails.

In 1998, Rick published his first book ‘Streeters’ highlighting his most famous rants on the show. Following the success of the segment ‘Talking to Americans,’ Rick co-produced a special based on the show attracting a record viewership of 2.7 million.

Rick finally moved on to ‘Made In Canada’ which focused on fast-paced comedy and parodies. It was approved to air in other markets as ‘The Industry’ and the show enjoyed a five-year run. In 2003, Rick began working on the series ‘Rick Mercer’s Monday Report’ which became one of the highest rated arts and entertainment shows at CBC. The show’s name was eventually changed to ‘The Rick Mercer Report’ when it was moved to Tuesday. It remained on air for 15 seasons captivating audiences all through. Rick has also hosted the show ‘It Seems Like Yesterday’ and made film appearances in the movies ‘Secret Nation,’ ‘Understanding Bliss,’ and ‘Bon Cop Bad Cop. Besides his career in comedy and TV, Rick has published the books; ‘ Rick Mercer Report: The Book,’ ‘ A Nation Worth Ranting About,’ ‘Rick Mercer Final Report’ and ‘Talking to Canadians: A Memoir.’ Throughout his career, Rick has received 25 Gemini Awards, a Peter Ustinov Comedy Award, a National Arts Centre Award, a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award and a Bob Edwards Award among other Honorary Awards and degrees.
