Dickinson was born in Brooklyn, NY to parents Ray and Jennie Marie Dickinson. Her father is of Scottish and Irish descent while her mother is of Polish descent.
Dickinson grew up in Hollywood, Florida with her sisters Alexis and Debbie, who also became a model. Dickinson has spoken freely of her abuse as a child and teenager by her father who sexually abused one of his daughters.
Dickinson moved to New York in the 1970s in order to pursue a career in modeling. This was after she won a tournament called “Miss High Fashion Model”. During this time, the modeling world was dominated by blue-eyed blondes, which presented major challenges to the brown-eyed, dark-haired Dickinson. In a series of multiple rejections, Dickinson was turned down by Eileen Ford, who told her she was “too native” and wouldn’t make it as a model.
Dickinson caught the attention of famous photographer Jacques Silberstein and was featured in high-fashion magazines across the US. As her modeling career picked up, Dickinson’s modeling career led her to Paris, France where she became a modeling sensation noted for her “exotic” appeal.
Years after her modeling career had ended, Dickinson returned to the public eye as a judge on the Tyra Banks show, America’s Next Top Model. Banks had been a fan of Dickinson particularly after reading her book No Lifeguard On Duty, which Banks believed could offer valuable advice to upcoming models. Dickinson was then offered a spot as a judge on the show.
During her time on America’s Next Top Model, Dickinson was lauded for her wit and sometimes brutal criticism. Dickinson frequently quarreled with fellow other judges on the show –especially Kimora Lee Simmons. Dickinson was fired from the show after four seasons.
In 2006, Dickinson launched her own modeling firm under the banner “Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency” which was featured on the network “Oxygen” for four seasons. During 2007 and 2009, Dickinson was involved in the UK TV show “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here”.
In 2015, Dickinson became a participant in Celebrity Big Brother, where she was evicted just days before the finale. Dickinson was the seventh person to be evicted from Celebrity Big Brother.
Dickinson has two children, a son Nathan, and daughter, Savannah. She has been married four times. It was reported in 1994 that Dickinson had an affair with Sylvester Stallone, who at the time was believed to be the biological father to her daughter Savannah. It was later then found out that Stallone was not the father.
Dickinson has listed numerous affairs she had with both male and female celebrities. In 2014, Dickinson spoke out against disgraced actor and comedian Bill Cosby, whom she claimed assaulted her in 1982. She also claimed that Cosby’s lawyers pressured her to drop the charges or at least not to disclose the details of the alleged sexual assault.
Dickinson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016.
