Early Life

Aurea was born and raised in Santiago Do Cacem, Portugal. As a child she spent time in the Algarve region of Portugal where she participated in school plays in an early effort to become an actress. Aurea joined Evora University to study performing arts. While in university, she was introduced to Rui Ribeiro, a Portuguese talent agent and record producer who became instrumental in launching her music career.

Career

Aurea’s first musical release was the 2008 single Okay Alright, which was picked up by a popular Portuguese TV series called Morangos com Açúcar. The song received significant airplay during the summer of 2008 after her performance at an annual festival.

In a 2010 interview, Aurea stated that she perferred to sing in English because soul music was “born” out of the English language. Her musical influences are Aretha Franklin, Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, and James Morrison.

In 2010, Aurea recorded a single called Busy for Me, a song that’s heavily influenced by old American soul ballads. The song was well-received by audiences and music critics, and led to a performance on a special TV broadcast.

The music video for Busy for Me came out in 6 August, 2010 and was directed by Ricardo Reis. Aurea collaborated with Rui Ribeiro to compose 9 songs that were featured in her first album titled Aurea. The album combined both pop and soul genres and borrows from a wide range of musical influences.
