Zoletta Lynn Taylor was born in Los Angeles, California on March 17, 1938, to parents Joseph and Katherine Taylor, Zola was one of six children. Zola’s father worked as a carpenter and her mother was a homemaker.
As a child, Zola always loved to sing and dance. When she was just eight years old, she began singing in her church as a choir. Zola’s interest in music continued to grow as she grows up, and by the time she was a teenager, she was performing at local clubs and churches.
In 1954, Zola met Frankie Lymon, who then become her other half. The two began singing and performing together, and in 1955 they formed a group called The Platters.
The group was signed to a record label, and they released their first single which became a hit. She was then replaced by Barbara Randolph in the year 1962.
The Platters had 40 charting singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart between 1955 and 1967, including four number-one hits “Only You (And You Alone)” (1955), “The Great Pretender” (1955), “My Prayer” (1956), and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” (1958).
In 1990, Taylor was chosen to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Platters.
Zola Taylor was married to Frankie Lymon from 1954 until his death on February 27, 1968, due to a heroin overdose at the age of 25. The couple had no children together.
Taylor continued to perform after Lymon’s death, but she eventually retired from the music industry because she could not bear to sing without him.
Zola Taylor died in Riverside, California on April 30, 2007, at the age of 69, due to pneumonia, following a series of strokes.
