Healy was born on October 10, 1981, in Thurles in Tipperary County in Ireland. Irish athlete Paul Hession is her cousin and country singer Declan Nerney is her uncle. At the age of nine, Healy was a national swimming champion in Ireland. She has also worked as a medical secretary and studied nursing and primary teaching at Mary Immaculate College.
