Early Life

Williams was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England to parents Janet and Peter Williams. His parents owned and operated a pub in Burslem before his father began working at the Port Vale FC Social Club, which started a lifelong support for the team. Williams was educated at St Margaret Ward Catholic school, located in Tunstall. Williams played parts in different school plays including that of the “artful dodger” in a production of Oliver Twist.

Career

Williams was sixteen years old when he joined the band Take That in 1990. According to Williams, his mom read a newspaper ad about a boy band that was looking to hire new members and asked Williams to apply. He first met fellow bandmate Mark Owens when auditioning with Nigel Martin Smith. Much of the band’s music was written and performed by Gary Barlow, however, Williams sang the vocals on the band’s first top ten hit “Could It Be Magic”, as well as the hits “Everything Changes’ ‘ and “I Found Heaven”.

It was Williams’ drug use that eventually led to conflict with Martin-Smith over behavioral issues and what had been a carefully crafted band image.

There were creative differences as well. Williams felt constrained by the band’s artistic presentation and wanted to move away from the ballads and experiment with hip hop, and rap. Martin-Smith discussed the issues surrounding Williams in interviews, pointing out that Williams had become belligerent and stopped offering creative input. Eventually Williams left the group in the middle of a world tour in July 1995.

Williams had agreed to a clause in his Take That contract that prohibited him from publishing any records until after the band had officially broken up. In July 1996 the band had dissolved and Williams signed a recording contract with Chrysalis Records.

As a solo artist, Williams released the album “Life thru a Lens” in 1996 followed up with “I’ve Been Expecting You”. His 2002 album Escapology was a massive commercial success that helped cement Williams as one of the most successful solo artists in the world. His 2002 recording contract with EMI was worth £80 million, making Williams the highest paid solo artist in the UK at the time.

Williams holds the record for the highest number of records sold in the UK by a single artist as well as the most valuable record contract by a UK solo artist.

Personal Life

Williams has spent a great deal of his time in Los Angeles since he moved there in 2006. He briefly moved back to the UK in 2009 for a year but later sold his recently purchased £8.5 million Wiltshire estate before returning to Los Angeles.

Williams sold his Hollywood mansion to DJ Khalid in 2017 for $9.9 million. This is after he had purchased a £17 million mansion in Kensington, west London, just next door to Led Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy Page.

Williams has publicly spoken about his earlier battles with mental health, substance abuse, obesity, self esteem issues.

He is reportedly friends with Olly Murs.

Williams married American actress Ayda Field in 2010 at the couple’s home in Los Angeles. Together they have four children; sons Beau and Charlton, and daughters Theodora and Colette. Williams lives with his family in a $24 million mansion in Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
