Early Life

Hirohiko Araki was born June 7, 1960, and was raised in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan on with his identical twin sisters.

According to him, he would spend time alone in his room reading manga to avoid her sisters. He was inspired by the famous French artist Paul Gauguin.

After a friend of his complimented his manga, he then started making more manga without his parent’s knowledge.

During his first year in high school, he first submitted his work to a magazine company. Unfortunately, all his submissions were rejected.

Career Highlights

In 1980, Hirohiko Araki dropped out of college and made his debut. His very first series to display his signature was his manga entitled Baoh in 1984. He was seen to really develop his signature art style in 1985.

In the September 2007 issue of the magazine Cell, the cover was drawn by Araki with a ligase represented as one of his Stands.

In 2009, Araki was chosen by the Musée du Louvre to create original works set at the famous museum.

In 2011, Gucci had the “Rohan Kishibe Goes to Gucci” Exhibition which is a collab of JoJo’s creator and Spur. The exhibit featured numerous illustrations by Araki. For Spur, Araki drew Kishibe Rohan meets Gucci.

In 2015, a book entitled Manga in Theory and Practice was released in Japan. The book is about explaining Araki’s methodology for creating manga. The English version of the book was released in the last quarter of 2017.

Araki was also the one who drew the official poster for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics,which he called The Sky above The Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa.
