Curtiss Cook was born on the 2nd of October 1980 in Dayton, Ohio. He identified his love for acting and musical theatre at a young age and spent his childhood watching West Side Story, Carmen Jones and The Wiz. Growing up,Cook was part of the organization Muse Machine which was involved in bringing concerts and dance companies to students. The guests would perform for the students and engage them in talks. Cook eventually got into dancing with the DCDC when a member of the group challenged him to show up for practice and she would train him for free. He availed himself for training and enjoyed the athleticism attached to dancing. Around the same time, Cookbegan singing and acting and even joined a high school cover band. Despite his incredible talent, Cook envisioned himself joining the Navy after high school and then returning home to work a nine-to-five job like his father. When he voiced these thoughts to the founder of Muse Machine,he immediately introduced Cook to the principal at Mountain View Theatre School in London where he was asked to audition for a chance at the institution. Cook did exceptionally well and he was granted a full-ride scholarship to the institution being the first American to receive the opportunity. It was while Cook was in theatrical school that he became aware of the minefield of opportunities in the career path ahead of him.
On his return to America, Cook immediately found his way into the musical theaters of New York doing regional plays and performances on Broadway with roles on’ The Lion King’ and ‘Miss Saigon.’ While he was still working on Broadway, Cook stumbled onto his first TV role with a small one-line part. On receiving his paycheck at the end of the day, he was surprised to learn that it was the equivalent of a week’s wages at his current job. Cook immediately made a conscious decision to learn as much as he could to get into acting. He began training himself on how to act Infront of a camera and established the dos and don’ts of on-screen acting.He also participated in students film to get a feel on character arcs within a film. Cook’s training in theatrical acting set him apart from the lot as he was able to portray a character’s background and emotion. With the help of an agent, Cook began to book roles and has since appeared in ‘ The Interpreter,’ ‘ Arbitrage,’ ‘House of Cards,’ ‘Manifest,’ ‘ The Chi,’ and ‘ Westside Story’ among multiple hit productions. Cook has also shared his talent behind the scenes as writer, director and producer. He was awarded Best Ensemble Cast in a Feature Film at Orlando Film Festival in 2016.
While Cook may be a successful actor now, he experienced difficult times at the beginning of his career. When he was starting out, Cook was a single dad to his three children Curtiss Jr., Kimani and Isis. He received sole custody of the children after parting ways with his ex-wife. Cook had a hard time juggling his numerous responsibilities as he struggled when it came to finding care for his children. Cook credits his family and friends who assisted him during his turbulent start as he admits he would never have made it alone. Cook also suffered financial strain and was once evicted along with his children before his breakout film.
Cook is currently remarried to Angelica Edward and the two were blessed with the children Harlem and Jade. He is also a grandfather.
