She was raised in the suburbs of Tallahassee and after completing high school joined Florida State University to pursue a degree in Business Marketing. Straight out of college, KJ secured herself a job in corporate America. A few years into her successful career, KJ enrolled at the Florida A&M University where she studied journalism. Despite the perks that came with working in corporate America, KJ realized she was unhappy with her career path which had heavily been influenced by other people’s expectations. It was at that point that she decided to move to Los Angeles to follow her dreams.
KJ’s move to Los Angeles was a big leap of faith and completely impromptu. While KJ had expected a quick climb to the top, the opposite seemed to be true. Despite putting in the much-needed work to make it in the industry, all her auditions seemed to fall through the hoops. With no lucrative salary to sustain her, KJ settled for a job in retail as she continued to work on her dream. KJ began doing several free jobs on web series and comedy skits. She also appeared on the shows ‘Conan,’ ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ and ‘Survivor’s Remorse.’
KJ’s big break came in 2016 when she appeared in Oprah Winfrey Network’s ‘Queen Sugar.’ The opportunity provided her with the visibility she needed to be successful in the industry. Kj has since been cast in ‘A Madea Family Funeral,’ ‘Sistas,’ ‘The Available Wife,’ and ‘Fatal Affair’ among other successful productions. KJ continues to pursue her dream both onscreen and behind the scenes, while remaining an active champion for mental health She also serves as a mentor for the younger generation that looks up to her and wants to pave the way to create opportunities for other aspiring actors to achieve their dreams
KJ is engaged to fellow actor Skyh Alvester Black. The two met on the set of Sistas when they were filming for the second season of the show. Although the two had chemistry, they maintained a professional relationship for fear of breaching their employment policies. The two finally got the chance to get together after Skyh left the show. According to KJ, she had sent him a DM to congratulate him on booking a new show and their romance bloomed after a lovely first date.
The two began officially dating in January of 2021 but kept their relationship private until September. Skyh proposed to KJ on the 25th of December 2021 in Miami, Florida and the two expect to tie the knot within the year.
KJ has also battled depression and is an advocate for mental health. Shortly after the passing of her father, KJ went fell into an endless pit of depression as she had missed out on spending time with him over the years. Although her father wanted the best for KJ, he believed a career in the corporate world was stable. KJ however left to pursue a different career which caused them to grow apart. Thankfully by the time of his passing, he had accepted her career and was proud of her work.
