Early Life

Carolyn Jones is an American actress who was born in Amarillo, Texas on April 28, 1930. She was the daughter of Julius Alfred Jones and Cloe Jeanette Southern. The family followed Judaism as their religion.

Her father abandoned the family in 1934, forcing her mother and younger sister, Bette Jones to move to her parent’s house in Amarillo.

Jones had severe asthma as a child, which limited her activities, and when she couldn’t attend the movies because of it, she became a voracious reader of Hollywood fan magazines and dreamed to be an actress.

At the age of 17, when she was a teenager, she became a member of Pasadena Playhouse in California which clearly shows how eagerly she wanted to be an actress.

Carolyn was a gifted child who received numerous awards at school for dramatics, speeches, and poetry.

While performing as a stand-by actor in the Player’s Ring Theatres, Jones was fortunate enough to be noticed by a talent agent from Paramount Pictures, who gave her a film trial. This is when her career took off and she got hired in the film industry.

Career Highlights

In 1952, at the age of 22 years, she made her film debut with William Holden in The Turning Point.

Carolyn made her television debut in 1952 on the show Gruen Playhouse. She made an appearance in the television series Dragnet in 1953.

In 1953, she played the character of Cathy Gray in the 3-D film House of Wax.

Theodora “Teddy” Belicec was played by Carolyn Jones in 1956 for a science horror film The Invasion of the Body Snatchers after which she started gaining fame. Alfred Hitchcock who is a legendary director allotted her in the film named, The Man Who Knew Too Much. As a diva, she starred in the film The Bachelor Party in 1957.

She has appeared in productions of Playhouse 90 and the Colgate Comedy Hour. It was her roles in the early 1960s television series The Addams Family that helped her garner more fame than any of her film roles. Her ability as a comic was highlighted in this performance, which also earned her a nomination for a ‘Golden Globe Award.’ In the television series Batman that was released from 1966 to 1967, she played the role of Marsha (the Queen of Diamonds).

Among Jones’ famous television roles from 1967-1976 were ‘Stacey Mc ‘Stacey Mc Call’ in The Dany Thomas Hour, ‘Lisa Whittaker’ in Mod Square, ‘Annie Spencer’ in The Virginian, and ‘Justine Cross’ in Ironside. She also appeared in the film Eaten Alive and Goodluck, Miss Wyckoff in the year 1977 and 1979, respectively.

Carolyn played ‘Ellie Ackland/ Clora McAllister/ Jessie De Winter’ in all three seasons of the television series Fantasy Island from 1979 to 1982.

From 1982-1983, she played ‘Myrna,’ the matriarch of the ‘Clegg Clan’ in the soap opera Capitol.

Personal Life 

Jones remarried four times but never had children. In her first marriage, she married Don Donaldson and divorced shortly. From 1953 until their separation in 1964, Jones was married to television producer Aaron Spelling.

Herbert Greene, a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical director, vocal arranger, and co-producer (who was also her voice instructor), was her third husband, whom she married in 1968 and divorced in 1977.

In 1981 Carolyn was diagnosed with Colon Cancer and it immediately spread all over her liver and stomach.

Jones didn’t give up even after being diagnosed with cancer and continued working. Jones married her five-year partner, actor Peter Bailey-Britton, in September 1982, despite realizing she was dying.

Death 

She died on August 3, 1983, in West Hollywood, California at the age of 50 and a memorial service was held at Glasband-Willen Mortuary in Altadena, California.
