James debuted her vocal prowess in 2000 when her vocals were featured on the soundtrack ‘Work’ in Jamie Foxx’s film ‘ Bait.’ In 2004, she landed her big break when she was selected to tour alongside The Black Eyed Peas and Macy Gray as an opening act. Noticing her powerful vocals and impeccable talent, hip hop producer, DJ and emcee Pete Rock featured her vocals on the song ‘No Tears’ for his album ‘Soul Survivor II.’ In 2005, she was featured on the song ‘Compared to What’ with Ray Charles for his album ‘ Genius & Friends.’

Having worked with great talent and garnered exposure within the industry, James embarked on expressing herself through her own art and released her first album ‘ A Change is Gonna Come’ on 21st June 2005. The album was heavily influenced by soul singers from the ’60s and ’70s with an incorporation of contemporary funk, R&B and gospel. She co- wrote most of the songs except No Doubt’s hit song ‘ Don’t Speak’ and the title song which was written by Sam Cooke. Besides the impeccable song selection, James also worked with great talent like Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq and Wyclef Jean.In 2006, James made her return to the scene by appearing as a guest vocalist on the ‘ Robert Randolph and the Family’ band’s album ‘ Colorblind.’

Just as her career was taking off, James parted ways with her label Warner Bros and signed to the independent label Shanachie Records. She followed this move with the release of her sophomore album ‘Let’s Do It Again’ on 24th March 2009 paying homage to the original soundtrack by The Staple Singers. In 2009, she appeared on Moby’s album ‘Wait for Me’ featuring on the song ‘Walk with Me.’ She proceeded to work with Stax label to release her third album ‘My Soul’ on 24th May 2010. The album debuted at number seven on the US Hip-hop/R&B charts. The project showcased James’ vocal range and brought an edge to her as she explored the hip-hop genre. In 2012, James once again partnered with Shanachie Records to release her fourth album ‘Loving You More… In the Spirit of Etta James’. The album was initially created with one song dedicated to Etta; however her sudden death inspired James to dedicate the entire project to her. James returned in July of 2014 releasing her fifth project ‘Fall for You.’ The album was a success with two singles charting in The Top 15 of Billboard’s Urban AC charts. On the release of the album, James hit the road on a nationwide tour with performances at Essence Music Festival and San Diego Jazz Festival among other stops.

Having established an audience and fan base through her music, James joined the cast of TV One’s reality show ‘R&B Divas:LA.’ She remained as a main cast member on the show for two seasons before eventually leaving the show.James once again impressed fans when she delivered her sixth project ‘Did It For Love’ on 31st March 2017 in collaboration with Shesangz music. The album included ‘Don’t Want You Back’ which peaked at number one on Billboard’s Adult R&B songs as her highest charting single. James has since released her latest project ‘See Me ‘in February of 2021 with the song ‘Complicated’ peaking at number 3 on Billboard’s Adult R&B songs.
