Ken Curtis took birth in Lamar and spent the initial 10 years of his life on a ranch on a muddy creek located in Eastern Bent County. In 1926, along with his family, Ken shifted to ‘Las Animas’ the county seat of ‘Bent County’ so that his father named ‘Dan Sullivan Gates’ could run for Sheriff. That appeared successful, and Gates served as ‘Bent County Sheriff’ for about 5 consecutive years from 1926 to 1931. Ken and other family members used to live below the jail those times, and his mother ‘Nellie Sneed Gates’ used to cook food for prisoners.

Meanwhile, Curtis was the quarterback of the ‘Bent County High School Football’ team and used to play clarinet with the school band.
