The half-Chinese Phillipa Soo was born on May 31, 1990, in Libertyville, Illinois. Her grandparents on her father’s side are from China and emigrated to the US. Her father worked as a medical doctor and her mother, who is from Southern Illinois, is into arts.
Phillipa began acting and singing at a young age. She attended Libertyville High School in Chicago for her high school education and she enrolled and graduated in 2012 from The Juilliard School’s acting program.
